    CEAS 2015 will be a unique opportunity for aerospace industries, academia, organizations and associations to communicate, share and debate innovative concepts and technical solutions in the aerospace domain. CEAS 2015 will promote the establishment of knowledge and technical networks with the aim of increasing European competitiveness in the field of aerospace. Participation from all major nations involved in aerospace across the world, a wide exhibition area, special sessions on selected topics and specific actions to facilitate students’ attendance will make CEAS 2015 one of the major European aerospace events. CEAS 2015 will be hosted by the Netherlands Association of Aeronautical Engineers (NVvL) in close cooperation with the Delft University of Technology (TUDelft) and the Society of Aerospace Students DUT (VSV Leonardo da Vinci) on behalf of the CEAS community. CEAS is an organization bringing together European national aerospace societies for increased international strength. Today, CEAS comprises 16 member organizations with an outreach to roughly 35,000 professionals in aerospace. Since 2007, CEAS hosts biennial conferences on aeronautics in Europe.     Innovative multistage co-bonding processes and assembly techniques have led to this robust and cost effective bucket for a wheel loader. Combining the advantages of glass fibre reinforced composite materials with the strength of metals rendered this light weight optimized hybrid solution.
    Lower production costs and weight reductions up to 35% can be achieved with this concept compared to a metal reference bucket. The weight reduction allows for an increased payload, reducing the operating costs of the total machine combination up to 10%. Field tests show that wear of the composite structure is not an issue and fill factors up to 200% (heaped) are possible.
    This innovation will reduce weight and manufacturing costs, ultimately resulting in lower fuel consumption and in service costs. This concept can be applied to a wide range of tools in the construction equipment sector, which opens a complete new field for composite applications. This innovation was developed in cooperation with several end users by The National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) of The Netherlands under the authority of ICO BV, with Gurit Ltd as composite material supplier, SME VABO Composites as production partner and Kuiken NV as distributor of construction equipment. The development of this bucket was supported by Compoworld.nl.

    Fokker Landing Gear and the Dutch National Aerospace Laboratory will create a manufacturing facility for composite landing gear parts, targeting qualification and early production capabilities.

    Fokker Landing Gear (FLG, Helmod, the Netherlands), part of Fokker Technologies and the Dutch National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) have signed a letter of intent for the creation of highly automated and state­-of-­the-­art manufacturing facility for composite landing gear parts at the NLR in Marknesse, the Netherlands. The signing ceremony was attended by the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, Mr, Henk Kamp.

    The facility is scheduled to be up and running in the third quarter of 2014 and will be about 500m2/5,382-ft2. About 20 Fokker specialists will work together with the NLR team. The manufacturing facility will use, combine and further improve proven and available manufacturing technology in support of FLG’s ambition to introduce its composite landing gear parts on new and existing landing gear designs, and to ensure a reliable and repetitive manufacturing process, reducing component costs under metal equivalents. The facility will produce composite landing gear components for customers for qualification and first production phase.

    FLG says the major advantages for the application of its composite technology on a landing gear for OEMs and operators are affordability, weight reduction (up to 30 percent), manufacturability, lower operational­ and maintenance costs, low susceptibility to damage and noise reduction.

    Since 1995 FLG and NLR have been actively engaged in the development of technologies for the application of thick-­walled polymer matrix composites in flight-critical and primary structural components for landing gear. In 2001 the joint FLG/NLR team was the first ever to actually flight test a composite landing gear drag brace on a RNLAF F-­16 aircraft. A major step was made in 2010 when FLG’s technological expertise on composite development led to a product development contract with UTAS (previously Goodrich Landing Gear), for the development and qualification of a composite drag brace for the F­-35 CTOL and STOVL main landing gear.

    Today, 11 March 2014, NLR and Dutch company Airborne Composites signed an agreement at the JEC Composites exhibition in Paris. In addition, a Letter of Intent has been signed between NLR and Fokker Landing Gear. Minister Kamp of Economic Affairs also visited the NLR stand today. Participation in the JEC exhibition takes place in the context of the Partners for International Business (PIB) program. The program focuses on increasing the market position in France by promotion and knowledge exchange in the field of composites and engines.

    Airborne Composites

    The agreement covers the opening of a branch of Airborne at the Composites Manufacturing Technology Centre of NLR, which is part of the CompoWorld Incubators in Flevoland. Airborne’s ambition is to extend their product range for the aerospace industry and is looking for a closer cooperation with NLR in order to enhance their competitiveness. NLR will make available facilities and capacity for technology development and the first series production. The cooperation will carry the name “ANTC”, Airborne NLR Technology Cooperation.

    Fokker Landing Gear

    The letter of intent involves the joint development and maintenance of a facility for industrial research and experimental development in the field of automated manufacturing processes for thick-walled composite landing gear components. These components are manufactured by means of resin injection. Fokker LG has internationally a leading technological role with regard to the application of composites in so-called ‘primary load carrying structures’ of landing gear.

    Situated in North Flevoland, the foundation stimulates and facilitates a climate favourable for high-quality composites (thermo hardeners, thermoplastics made of dry fibres) in which innovations in the field of high-quality composites can develop from primary research to production via industrially applied research and development programmes with which businesess can convert the accumulated knowledge and expertise into commercial projects.

    This makes CompoWorld a unique initiative within the Netherlands.However, CompoWorld is not aloneand there are several complementary initiatives in the Netherlands.CompoWorld will work pro-actively to establish cooperative projects with these other initiatives.
